The Annual
Hedge Event
March 8th 2008
The event this year was held at Lower Shelvin Farm, Luppitt, by kind permission of Mr. Arthur Sage.
It was the largest ever event staged by the Association with 67 entries some from as far away as the Midlands. Even the weather was kind and we just managed to escape the severe gales that swept the region over that weekend.
In addition to the competition there were a number of demonstrations of different hedgelaying styles including the Irish style and Midland style. We had a visit from eleven representatives of the hedgelaying Association of Ireland who stayed for the weekend. Strong links have been formed with the Irish group and future events in Ireland are a being planned.
Refreshments were served by the legendary Smeatharpe WI.
What’s the Blackdown Hills Hedge Event all about? You may never have visited a hedging competition before and might like a bit of background information to familiarize yourself with exactly why we have them and how hedge laying is judged. The hedging event is a really good way to drum up some friendly competition between hedgers of all abilities. It enables the professionals to show what they can do and is one way in which less experienced hedgers can enhance their skills at a more social level. A competition such as this also helps keep this important traditional craft alive.
