Devon Hedge Week 25th October to 2nd November 2008
Devon Hedge Week is an annual event, organised by the Devon Hedge Group. Its purpose is to raise awareness and appreciation of Devon's magnificent network of hedges. It takes the form of a week of hedge-related events and activities arranged by various farming and conservation organisations, local authorities, local businesses and even individuals. These generally include:
Training in and demonstrations of traditional hedge-related crafts,
such as hedge steeping or the repair of turf and stone faced banks. This
includes hands-on opportunities to have a go at these activities.
Farm walks, looking at examples of recent hedge management and discussion
of different techniques.
Talks on the wildlife and historic importance of hedges, including
events which concentrate on particular species (e.g. dormice) particularly
associated with Devon's hedges.
Events or activities to interest children, such as the decoration
of hedges or hedge-based 'treasure trails'.
Devon Hedge Week is organised by: A group of organisations and individuals commited encourage appreciation, understanding and conservation of Devon's superb hedges.
