Making a Blackdown
Trug
Elegant, practical and instantly recognised the traditional Sussex trug has always been admired for its solid practicality and craftsmanship. Using willow and hazel from the Blackdowns Martin Turner will show you how to manipulate a billhook to split the hazel rods for the handle and frame and how to shape them up with a drawknife on a shaving horse. Then he’ll take you through the mysteries of softening them up in a steamer and forming them to shape. The final job is securing the curved willow slats in the frame with decorative, copper nails and nailing on the feet. The resulting Blackdown trug will be a fine piece of craftsmanship for you to take home, use and enjoy.
